Collection Development Policy

Cooperative Networks

Johnston Memorial Library participates in the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA). VIVA is the consortium of the libraries of 39 state-assisted colleges and universities, 9 comprehensive institutions, and 24 community and two-year branch colleges. Johnston Memorial Library will supplement its collection through resource sharing, document delivery services, and cooperative collection development.

The Library is also a member of the Richmond Academic Library Consortium (RALC). RALC membership includes the ten libraries in the Richmond area, namely: the Library of Virginia, Randolph-Macon College, Reynolds Community College, Richard Bland College, Brightpoint Community College, Union Presbyterian Seminary, University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia State University, and Virginia Union University. It is a non-profit, multi-library regional cooperative that assists libraries by leading and encouraging collaboration, resource sharing, staff development, and innovations. RALC also provides a courier service, which delivers materials to member libraries by request, within 48 hours.

The library takes into consideration its resource-sharing networks in making collection development decisions. Cooperative collection development programs build upon the strengths of the participants and our goal is to do more cooperative development.
