Tips for Exams

Here are some of the most important things to consider when studying for exams:

  • Find out what you can about the exam. You might have a rubric that outlines what the examiner will be looking for. Your teacher may have told you if the exam will be short answer, rubric-based, essay, open book, etc.
  • Look at old exam papers or ask your teacher for past student examples
  • Prepare early and decide on your goals, e.g. how well you want to do and how much time are you prepared to invest to achieve this
  • Find a study space (or spaces) and do what you know will help you focus, e.g. by removing distractions or creating an online collaborative study space
  • Organize your materials and notes in folders or online (whatever suits you). It may be worth doing this before you start to make sure you can find what you need without wasting time.
  • Find out exactly what will be assessed so that you are not revising everything unnecessarily
  • Before you revise, identify what you already know and understand, what you need to know, and how you can find out and/or remember additional information.
